Tank War-Central Front (Elite Series No. 26), by Steven J. Zaloga

In the late 1980s, with the Intermediate Nuclear Force Treaty in effect, public attention turned to discussions of conventional weapons in Europe, particularly tanks. Though the importance of tanks had dimished since their heyday in the Second World War, on the modern battlefield they remained the dominant weapon. This text, enhanced by colour plates and photographs, examines the NATO and Warsaw Pact tank forces of that era, focusing on tank firepower and crew training, and speculates as to the possible outcome had a conventional land war been fought between them.

Truth is in the middle
By matt8386
I bought this book because I served in M-1 tanks in Germany 83-86. Back then, we knew we were going to fight outnumbered. We expected to win. We knew we had better training, a better tank (better gun, the M-1 can fire accurately on the move, has better firepower and protection). Oh, and better tactics, command and control.

I agree the fictional war scenario in the beginning is silly. That is only a few pages, and was popular writing style back then (this was first published in 1989 before Gulf 1).

The author Steven Zaloga is an armor expert, especially on Soviet equipment. We know now that everything the Soviets put out in the field is junk. The T-72 is vastly inferior to the NATO tanks. Hit it and watch the turret fly 50 feet in the air. It does not have good night vision and cannot fire accurately on the move. US tankers are better trained and can fire more rounds per minute. The book captures these facts, outlines numbers of each country that would have fought.

The book addresses all of the critical factors in a "what if" war with NATO and Warsaw pact. Numbers of tanks, tranining, equipment. The US Army has professional soldiers, officer and NCO corps. That leads to a better army. We trained more in the field than any other army.

The NTC? Every tanker who visits there will tell you the same thing. The "OPFOR" (bad guys) are the best trained tankers in the world, have "home field" advantage. They know the terrain. And, no one, not even the Soviets, uses reconaissance as well as the OPFOR. US and Isreali tankers who have been to the National Training Center all say it is tougher than war. It's supposed to be. Better to learn in peace than the hard way. Ask the Iraqi's. Or anyone the Isreali's fought against.

There are many excellent color diagrams showing the camoflague schemes of the tanks and uniforms of the soldiers as well.

This is an overview of the facts, but at 64 pages, that's all it's supposed to be. I enjoyed this book, especially looking back at the opinions that were being written 20 years ago. Recommended for those just getting into armor history or collecters who want to add something different to the libray.

Lob-sided view at the war that might of been.
By A Customer
The book starts off with a 'very' fictional scenario, which depicts an army of USSR's elite tanks being destroyed by three Western MBT's. Totally discarding that T-80, has the most powerful gun fitted to any tank, and that it has the capability to fire an anti-tank missile at ranges well beyond those achieved by The Abrams or the Challenger. The whole book is structured to expose USSR's armoured weaknesses, some of which are quite fictional, while not even mentioning the setbacks the "Western" armies have. Steven Zaloga's reference to Russian people as "Russkis" is quite symbolic of the tone in which the entire book was written. Drawings by Simon McCouaig are of high quality, especially the detailed look at the Tanks from Top, Side and Rear viewpoints. Also note how the "Russian observer" looks, compared to all the other people drawn in the "colour" plates.

A classic of animal behavior studies
By R. M. Jones
By the time I read this study I had been raising a rare breed of domestic rabbit for a little over 2 years. I had developed a pretty good idea from close association of what your average caged domestic bun wanted in a social relationship, given that my breeding program conformed to external (my) design: as an adult they like having a cage they can call their own - and defend if necessary. It's axiomatic that the does rule anything close to resembling a roost, and conjugal visits take place at HIS residence, not hers, if you want to keep your buck from harm!

Due to the objectives of my breeding program - aiming for type, weight gain and docile disposition on top of reproductive capability and disease resistance - I'm not willing to turn everyone out together in my 1/10 acre and validate the intricate social structures observed and discussed at length in this book. But I certainly found it very informative about how wild rabbits form their territorial associations and social relationships in a large, only marginally-confined area and it has continued to give me food for thought in providing as well as I can for my caged, domestic versions.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone who works with domestic rabbits as an in-depth contrast to the caged environment; it's filled with detailed observations of unfettered rabbit life out in the wild, with all its pros and cons as compared to the small, tame life our domestic buns blithely know.

Bestiary: Being an English Version of the Bodleian Library, Oxford, MS Bodley 764, by Richard Barber

Bestiaries are a particularly characteristic product of medieval England, and give a unique insight into the medieval mind. Richly illuminated and lavishly produced, they were luxury objects for noble families. Their three-fold purpose was to provide a natural history of birds, beasts and fishes, to draw moral examples from animal behaviour (the industrious bee, the stubborn ass), and to reveal a mystical meaning - the phoenix, for instance, as a symbol ofChrist's resurrection. This Bestiary, MS. Bodley 764, was produced around the middle of the thirteenth century and is of singular beauty and interest. The lively illustrations have the freedom and naturalistic qualityof the later Gothic style, and make dazzling use of colour. This book reproduces the 136 illuminations to the same size and in the same place as the original manuscript, fitting the text around them. Richard Barber's translation from the original Latin is a delight to read, capturing both the serious intent of the manuscript and its charm.

Review
The translation is pellucid, and the colourful late-gothic illustrations really delightful. Epic begets epic: stupendous and thought-provoking. FORTEAN TIMES An invaluable resource for readers and writers who aspire to understand how mediaeval men and women viewed the natural world, both actual and fantastical. HISTORICAL NOVELS REVIEW Excellent translation from the Latin original makes for fascinating reading about beasts, real and imaginary, of the medieval world. The most delightful picture-book about animals you'll ever see. EVENING STANDARD Hugely enjoyable, this English version of a 13th-century manuscript in the Bodleian Library offers every kind of beast... The illustrations are gorgeous and well reproduced. A medieval, Gothic bestiary
By Ashtar Command
"Bestiary" is a translation of a medieval book about animals, originally written in Latin during the 13th century, somewhere in England. The main source for this bestiary was another bestiary, compiled during the 12th century, and also translated to English as "The Book of Beasts". Thus, the text of the two books are very similar. If you just want to buy one of them, I recommend "Bestiary". The reason? The illustrations are much better, and they are all in full color! Indeed, the illustrations are taken straight from the original manuscript, making "Bestiary" not just a translation of an ancient book, but also an example of medieval (Gothic) art.

We are used to a modern, scientific view of nature and animals. The Middle Ages saw things differently. Animals weren't seen as random products of blind, natural forces. They were created by God for the edification of the human race. Indeed, Adam named all animals in the Garden of Eden, each name reflecting their true character. Animals were not just brute beasts. They carried a moral message, directed to sinful humanity. They also carried a hidden, mystical meaning, which somehow paralleled the message of the Bible itself! All the world was seen as an enchanted, magical place, with each thing a symbol for deeper, moral or spiritual, realities.

This explains the rather strange style of "Bestiary". It's not just a collection of (often badly distorted) zoological facts. It's also a book of moral edification. The anonymous author often digresses from the "real" subject (the animals), and starts to preach Christian morality to his readers. That, too, was considered part of the subject. After a short description of the pig, the author attacks sinful gluttons and unclean heretics. The author also claims that coots take care of eagle chicks that have been rejected by their parents. The moral lesson? Animals are better than humans, who treat the children of strangers with out-most cruelty! The bestiary further claims that lions don't kill humans who prostrate before them, that they liberate captive humans, and that they never attack women. Once again, the lesson is clear: the lion has a Christian morality, while man too often hasn't. One of my favorite birds, the jackdaw, is apparently an apt symbol for chattering philosophers and heretics, not to mention gossipy and greedy men!

The mystical meaning of various animals is the most far-fetched aspect of the bestiary. All of nature somehow proved the Christian message of salvation. The virgin birth of Christ was "proven" by the claim that female vultures (!) gave birth without sexual intercourse. The resurrection was paralleled by the fiery death and re-birth of the Phoenix. The bestiary further claims that female lions give birth to stillborn cubs, but after three days, the male lion breaths life into them. This points to the resurrection of Jesus, and also to the Biblical passage "He couched as a lion, who shall raise him up?" (Genesis 49:9).

What particularly strikes a modern reader of "Bestiary" is the dismally low level of real zoological knowledge available during the 13th century. To a large extent, the bestiary was a collection of tall-tales. Indeed, many of them seem deliberately tailored to produce Christian parallels, such as the legend of lion cubs being "resurrected" on the third day. Of course, this fable-like quality makes "Bestiary" a very entertaining read. Thus, we learn that the beaver will bite off his own testicles if pursued by hunters, that a certain antelope in Africa can change its colors like a chameleon, that lions fear white roosters, or that barnacle geese grow from sea-weed! Some of the creatures in the bestiary are purely imaginery, such as unicorns, dragons, the manticore, and the eale (a deer with movable horns). Only the bat seems to be reasonably correctly described, without legendary or mystical accretions.

"Bestiary" is an entertaining read, an excellent work of art due to its full-color illustrations, and offers a fascinating look at the medieval world-view and mentality.

But if you want to know what's really shaking in the animal world, please buy a modern science book, LOL.

Just a Mom...
By Lynda Yoder
Look, I am just a mom. I am not some specialist in Medieval art or a religious commentator. I am just a mom. I have a six year old son who thinks the sun rises and set on this book. And with a little parental editing I read (most of) it aloud to him. The pictures are fantastic and detailed. It was just what I was looking for when my son requested a book on mythical beast. These animals appear in fairy tails and fantasy games and he wanted more detail on what they were exactly. A lot of discussion about what is real, what was misunderstood and what was just plain made up. A great spring board for critical thinking for a kid. It has been absconded by older brother who is 27 years old. My sons and I have enjoyed this book thoroughly.

An affordable treat for bibliophiles
By A Customer
There is something quintessentially appealing about the rare reproduction which manages to preserve so much of the spirit of the original text. The translation, which is quite clear, is embedded with the original illuminations found in the manuscript, in their original size and location relative to the page. The result is surprisingly refreshing; the decision to eschew modern layout conventions was a wise one. This is not a scholarly edition per se, and some may quibble with occasional word choice. But this medievalist, for one, has no problem with such decisions to leave out mention of the Physiologus; true translation is as much art as science, and anyone doing serious research on this book would (should) be using the original Latin anyway. This is a highly successful translation, and frankly a beautiful book, the sort that should occupy a well-worn spot on shelves of scholars and enthusiasts alike.

Good For Its Brevity.
By SUPPORT THE ASPCA.
As always Angus McBride's color plates are as lifelike as can be. Especially, plates A,E,F, & G. These elite series are more in depth than the usual armor, weapons, & uniforms. The text is more varied. From their origins in the eigth century to all their adventures from all compass points, we get little gems of information. A refreshingly wide range of sources are used. Norse sagas, English, Arab, Byzantine, Frankish, & Irish chronicles. Most areas are touched on to varying degrees. From their tactics, well known campaigns, & the Varangian guard to the less known "Jomsvikings." The latter being independent, strictly run mercenary companies.

Also, some interesting anecdotes: Did you know that dark hair was much more common among the Danes than the Swedes & Norwegians? That certainly would explain the physical appearance of the Normans on the Bayeux Tapestry. If it had a dozen more pages I would have given it five stars. For 63 pages it was well worth the price.

Imagine the terror of seeing these guys arrive in your town
By Jonathan
Like other books in the Osprey Elite series, this one held my interest throughout. Therefore I finished it very quickly. The illustrations help me visualize what real life Vikings must have looked like.

The description of the Viking rite of "carving-the-blood-eagle" was something that I had never read anywhere before. Imagine the terror of seeing these guys arriving from over the horizon ca. 950 A.D.

The Army of Alexander the Great (Men at Arms Series, 148), by Nicholas Sekunda

When Philip II ascended the throne in 359 BC, Macedonia was in danger of being engulfed by wild barbarian tribes to the north and wily Greek cities to the south. Philip had to expand the power of the throne or be swallowed up: the creation of a powerful army was imperative. When his son, Alexander, inherited his kingdom at the age of 20, he also inherited an army which was truly unrivalled. The Macedonians were veterans of battle, well equipped and eager for conquest. Add to this Alexander's supreme gifts as military commander and it is little wonder they achieved so much.

Some severe problems....
By Jeffrey F. Bell
These Osprey books usually are pretty accurate.... But this one is a rare exception. The order-of-battle information is OK, but when it comes to clothes and weapons of Alexander's troops, Sekunda is off in left field. He relies almost exclusively on the so-called "Alexander Sarcophagus". This was carved for a Phoenician client-king by imported Greek artists, and the protrayal of Macedonian troops on it seems to have been strongly affected by old Greek artistic conventions, e.g. "heroic nudity". Sekunda can't quite bring himself to believe that Macedonian infantry fought stark naked, but he does accept other features of these carvings that are strongly contradicted by the literary sources. The worst error is his claim that Alexander's infantry all used the old "Argive" or "hoplite" shield, which would make it impossible for them to use both hands to hold their long pikes. The illustrator has neatly dodged this issue by showing all the Macedonians fighting with only their swords in skirmishing or urban-warfare scenes. If you really want to know how Alexander's troops looked, find a copy of Duncan Head's ARMIES OF THE MACEDONIAN AND PUNIC WARS (1982) with has a much more complete treatment based on a variety of sources.

An area that desperately needs more researchers!!
By A Customer
The army of Alexander would seem to be an excellent topic for a book. Yet, this is the only one in existence that documents colours as well as weapons/tactics etc. The art is quite superb. A unique book, delving into an area that despeartely needs more researchers!

This Osprey doesn't hold the measure!
By Tom Fils
This Osprey doesen't have the quality as former Osprey books i have read.

The author don't have the right sources to write a book upon the subject.

Theres are lots of remarkable errors in the book.

For example no companion cavalryman in the platesfights with armour on, and no pictures showing infantry with sarrisas(5m long spears) the weapon the Macedonians whas become famous with.

The worst errors in the plates are soldiers hunting nude.

Personally i like Angus McBride but this is not one of his better illustations.

And for the writer, Nick Sekunda, his writng is terrible.

I am very disappointed about this book.

I had such high expections on this book becuse it is a so important subject.

Alexander was that important subject, and im sad to now that we now so little about him, and espcially his fighting forces.
