German Medieval Armies 1300-1500 (Men-at-Arms), by Christopher Gravett

The German rulers were forceful and powerful men, and, surrounded by potential enemies, circumstances dictated the necessity of rule by strength based on military capacity. In the later 15th Century, three houses rose above the others; the families of Wittelsbach, Luxemburg and the powerful Austrian Hapsburgs. The struggles of these and other houses, and of the knights and towns, were to be a feature of German history throughout the Middle Ages. This title details the dress, weapons, heraldry and insignia of these prolific forces, as well as various battles, such as the Battle of Goellheim of 1298.

Knechts und knaves
By ignorance is bliss
The usual good basic coverage by Osprey, covering the Holy Roman Empire. Wars were frequent, between principates, towns and cities, leagues, robber barons, religious groups. It's no wonder that Germany would be the site of some of the bloodiest campaigns during the later Thirty Years' War. There is also an excellent section on the Hussites and their unique method of fighting the Empire. There is even a halfway decent map in this one! The excellent color plates by Angus Mcbride start with chainmail and end with full gothic plate armor.

Deutsches Kriegern!
By Captain Sternn
Yet another enjoyable book from Osprey.
Here we have a lavishly illustrated summary of the military history of Germany in the late Middle-ages, 1300-1500. A time of escalating conflicts, internally and externally, this era witnessed not only major and minor wars, but the advent of great intellectual and theological advances in the various principalities we now know as Germany.

Martin Luther protested against corruption in the church, and translated the Bible into a vernacular language for the first time. Many notable universities flourished in the German states at this time. The technology and logistics of warfare changed drastically. Firearms grew in prominence on the battle-field. Armor evolved from chain-mail or scale, to the glorious Gothic-plate suits which most people envision when they imagine the knight in full battle-gear. German armorers were second to none!

Warfare was a common occurence, and all manner of people practiced warrior skills and possessed arms. Both common-citizens and aristocracy formed leagues and guilds-of-arms to defend their country, city, property, family, and freedom from the depradations of their neighbors.

For quite some time, much of the material one found on Medieval warfare focused almost exclusively on the Anglo, Celtic, and Franco regions of Europe, or the Crusades. Now, these are also very fascinating, but there has not been much coverage of the Germanic and Slavic regions. You will learn about campaigns in Eastern Europe, the Hussite wars, in which Jan Ziska led a unique wagon-borne army that fought from improvised field-fortifications assembled from their vehicles. Conflicts with the notorious Swiss pikemen, and the battle of Visby in Gotland are also covered.

Decent Introduction and Summary of the Topic
By W. Ford
As with other books in this series I thought that this was a decent intro and summary to the topic. I enjoyed the color plates. However, I would have liked to have seen a MUCH more extensive Bibliobraphy so that you could continue your research into the topic. This series kind of leaves you at a dead end.

Napoleon's German Allies (1) : Westfalia and Kleve-Berg (Men-At-Arms Series, 44), by Otto von Pivka

Austria's defeat at the battle of Hohenlinden, on 3 December 1800, created a power vacuum in the area now known as Germany, and Napoleon lost little time in transforming this zone into a pro-French 'cordon sanitaire', creating as he did so the Duchy of Berg, which he later united with Kleve. Like Kleve-Berg, Westfalia was also ruled entirely according to French law, and both provided troops for the French Emperor. In this first of five volumes concerning Napoleon's German allies, Otto Von Pivka explores the Napoleonic campaigns, uniforms, flags and standards of Westfalia and Kleve-Berg.

Great, but some problems
By Thomas Hillman
Overall, it is a very good book for those looking for uniform details, order of battle, and a brief campaign history. One error is that the 1st edition 1975 text was not updated completely with the 1992 edition with its new color plates. The 1992 text therefore notes for "Fusilier-Garde, see color plate" for more details and it is not there. The same is true for the Husaren-Garde". For organization you must look at Osprey books on the French since this army copied their doctrine. The 1809 campaign also references the Brunwicker book for details.

If either of these two armies interests you, this book is a must have. The color plates are excellent, and so are the army and uniform descriptions. A must have for wargamers and enthusiasts alike.

Letter of James: Introduction and Commentary (Tyndale New Testament Commentaries), by Douglas J. Moo

"The Bible is being translated, commented on, read, studied, preached and analyzed as never before. But it is questionable whether it is being obeyed to a comparable degree," says Douglas Moo in the preface to his commentary on James. "All this suggests that the message of James is one that we all need to hear--and obey. No profound theologian, James' genius lied in his profound moral earnestness; in his powerfully simple call for repentance, for action, for a consistent Christian lifestyle. His words need to thrust through our theological debates, our personal preconceptions, our spiritual malaise and set us back on the road to a biblical, invigorating, transforming Christianity." The Tyndale New Testament Commentaries have long been a trusted resource for Bible study. Written by some of the world's most distinguished evangelical scholars, these twenty volumes offer clear, reliable, and relevant explanations of every book in the New Testament. These Tyndale volumes are designed to help readers understand what the Bible actually says and what it means. The introduction to each volume gives a concise but thorough description of the authorship, date, and historical background of the biblical book under consideration. The commentary itself examines the text section by section, drawing out its main themes. It also comments on individual verses and deals with problems of interpretation. The aim throughout is to get at the true meaning of the Bible and to make its message plain to readers today. The original, unrevised text of this volume has been completely retypeset and printed in a larger, more attractive format with the new cover design for the series.

Review
"The Tyndale volumes have long been the premier shorter-length commentary series on both Testaments throughout the English-speaking world." (Craig Blomberg, Denver Seminary)

"Tyndale commentaries are always useful, not least because they focus so clearly on the text of Scripture, and do not fall into the trap of paying too much attention to other commentaries and not enough to the scriptural text they are intended to expound and explain. So they retain their usefulness for preachers, Bible study leaders and for all readers of the Bible." (Peter Adam, principal, Ridley College, Melbourne, Australia)

"Within its constraints, this series includes some outstanding volumes." (D. A. Carson, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School)

"There simply is no series of medium-length commentaries that approaches the excellence of the Tyndale commentaries." (Donald A. Hagner, Fuller Theological Seminary)

"The evenness and quality of this series are remarkable." (Christianity Today)

Great
By W. cornett
This is Moo's second commentary on the epistle of James. He wrote his first one in 1985 as part of the Tyndale series. This commentary is the result of fifteen years of reflection on that work. The content of this commentary makes it evident that this is the mature thought of a noted scholar on the letter of James. Those fifteen years left him more convinced "that the heart of the letter is a call to wholehearted commitment to Christ" (x).

Moo provides a lengthy introduction to this epistle (46 pages worth). This introduction includes the history of James in the church, nature and genre, authorship, theology, occasion and date, and structure of James. Concerning authorship, Moo holds that James, the bother of Christ, is the author. He presents arguments against this traditional view and then answers them. The section on the theology of the book is a feature more commentaries would do well to include. He dates the writing of the letter around the middle of the 40s AD. This is important because the date of writing has great implication on the relationship of the letter to Paul's teachings. Moo does not place a ridge structure on the letter. Instead, he finds "several key motifs" which "are often mixed together with other themes in paragraphs that cannot be labeled as neatly as we might like" (45). Denying the assertion of some commentators that the letter has no unifying purpose, Moo argues that the central concern of the letter is spiritual wholeness of the readers (47).

Moo's analysis of the text is insightful. His word studies are well done. He presents a wide range of possible meanings but uses the context to determine which meaning is James's meaning. Moo also does a good job in showing James's relationship with Paul. James is not writing against Paul. James means something different by faith than does Paul. They are addressing different problems.

The format of the commentary is user friendly for the most part. One helpful aspect is that Moo's introductory notes precede the verse by verse exposition of major points and most sub-points. Moo transliterates Greek words making the commentary usable to those who do not have the advantage of knowing Greek. One slight critique concerns the chapter divisions. The chapter divisions of the commentary are based on the chapters of James. This is fine, but the table of contents is broken down by his outline. One would whish the editors would choose a method of division and stay with it. The only other criticism is that Moo's writing style can be difficult at times. These two minor criticisms in no way change the fact that this is a masterpiece. It is short at only 251 pages not counting indexes. Anyone from a layperson to a scholar will benefit from this commentary. This reviewer would recommend it without hesitation (something he does not do often).

Highly readable modern commentary. Great for Pastoral use
By B. Marold
`The Epistle of James' by James B. Adamson, 1976, 227 pages in the series The New International Commentary on the New Testament; `The Letter of James' by Douglas J. Moo, 2000, 271 pages, a volume in the series The Pillar New Testament Commentary; and `James' by Ralph P. Martin, 1988, 240 pages, A volume in the series Word Biblical Commentary are all `full featured' and recent commentaries on the first of the short `catholic' epistles in the New Testament.

I find it amazing how different the material is in these three volumes. After 1800 years of commentary, one would expect a fair amount of uniformity in thinking about this short letter, but there is a remarkable range of differences in emphasis among the three.

Those of you who are familiar with the world of biblical commentary will recognize that all three are part of major series of commentaries. Adamson and Moo belong to series dedicated to the New Testament, while Martin's volume is an offering of a larger series on both Old and New Testaments. And, each volume is organized in a way to match the editorial style of their series. This is most clearly seen in Martin's volume, as his work is organized in virtually the same way as the much larger work on Paul's Epistle to the Romans by the distinguished scholar, James D. G. Dunn. This is no surprise, as Martin is the New Testament editor for his series, the Word Biblical Commentary.

Ranked by scholarly detail, Martin has the most and Adamson has the least, with Moo somewhere in between; but don't take from this that Martin is heavy on the Greek and Adamson has no original Greek. All three are specifically written for the scholar and assume that the reader either knows classical Greek or is willing to slog through all the Greek words and expressions. The irony here is that while Martin is the most heavily scholarly, it may also be the most accessible to the lay or strictly pastoral user, since this series divides scholarly observations into the `Comments' on each paragraph, while more general thoughts are spelled out in straight English in the `Form/Structure/Setting' section and later in the `Explanation' section following the `Comments'. Adamson organizes all his `special' or more technical topics in `Excursus' sections following his main commentary. I found this just a tad distracting, especially when I discovered some mistakes in references to these Excursus sections in the main text.

All three authors give us their own translations of the text, and all three agree on where the difficult phrases are to be found. If I were to pick a volume purely on the basis of their translation, I would prefer Adamson, as he seems to give translations that best resolve these difficult sections. But, in all three cases, the authors agree on where the difficulties lie and, in general, the nature of the difficulties.

In the three authors' introductory chapter on the author, themes, and canonical status of the letter, all three agree on the major points. They uniformly agree, for example on the belief that the letter does, in fact, represent the thoughts or writings of James, the brother of Jesus, who was head of the Christian Jews in Jerusalem up to about 62 CE. They also agree that the final form of the letter was rewritten and polished sometime in the early 2nd century, CE. The authors are also uniform in their citing Martin Luther's misunderstanding of James; however, I would give Luther credit for seeing scriptural support of many Roman Catholic doctrines, even if any sound reading of `James' shows that this support is probably stretching James points just a little too far.

On the major themes of the letter, I generally prefer Martin's emphasis on the three topics of `Wisdom', `Perfection', and `The Piety of the Poor' to the other authors' interest in theology and the law. James is clearly spending less times on these typically Pauline topics than he is on lessons for a Christian life.

Among all the other differences, it is most remarkable to see all the differences between how the three authors structure an outline of the short letter. If you didn't know better, you may think they were talking about two different writings. This is just a symptom of the fact that `James' is much less a theological argument a la `Romans' and much more a collection of lessons on prayer, right Christian behavior, and the implications of faith. This is consistent with the fact that the letter has much in common with the Gospels, especially the Gospel of Matthew (See Martin).

One last difference I detect between the three is the fact that Martin makes more connections to modern theology of, for example Dietrich Bonhoffer, while Moo and Adamson have more citations to the great reformers, Calvin and Luther.

If I had to pick only one of these, I would go with Martin's volume in the Word Biblical Commentary series. If I were interested only in pastoral interpretation, I would go with Moo or the article `The Letter of James' by Luke Timothy Johnson in `The New Interpreter's Bible', since both refer heavily to the standard NIV and NRSV translations. If your interest is in a scholarly study of the letter, you will probably want all three.

My Favorite James Commentary
By Jacob and Kiki Hantla
This is my favorite commentary on James, and I have read many (see some of my other reviews). Moo has the most accessible, thorough, and easy-to-use commentary that I have read. This Pillar commentary is longer than the same author's commentary written for Tyndale's New Testament Commentary Series. You would do well to buy either one of these.
Moo works very hard to be exegetical. He hesitates--no, he refrains--from saying anything that he cannot demonstrate exegetically from the text. He humbly alerts the reader when his view is in the minority or contested and even humbly admits when his view is not the only defendable one (see, specifically James 4:5). To a degree matched by few, Moo not only seeks to technically (without belaboring issues so as to make them inaccessibly technical) defend his points exposing salient points of interest in the text, but he also is a carefully writes his sentences, not wasting words.
The student of the Letter of James would be amiss not to invest in the Pillar Commentary by Moo. For those who would like it a little shorter and a little easier to digest, his Tyndale Commentary on James will suffice as well. Two other James commentaries that I would highly recommend are Kistemaker's and MacArthur's.

In depth coverage of a fine Italian bike and its builder.
By Avid reader
From the front flap:

"The story of Moto Guzzi, and the single-cylinder bikes in particular, begins and ends with the involvement of two rich Italian entrepreneurs, the first being a Genoese shipping magnate who donated the funds needed to develop the design and the second being Alejandro De Tomaso who now controls Guzzi, amongst other Italian marques.

"This is very much a story of men as well as machines - and not just the star riders like Stanley Woods, Omobono Tenni, Fergus Anderson, Bruno Ruffo, Bill Lomas, Keith Campbell and Arthur Wheeler, who kindly wrote the foreword, but also men such as Carlo Guzzi, Giorgio Parodi and Giulio Cesare Carcano who performed near-miracles, far from the cheering crowds, in the design office or boardroom.

"From those early days, when there was some uncertainty as to whether to take the unique design racing, this book chronicles an astounding story of achievement and development (sprung frames, rotary-valve induction for two-strokes, and chrome-plated alloy cylinders), which culminated in victory over the demanding Isle of Man circuit.

"In the 1950s Moto Guzzi played a key role in what is now regarded as the Golden Age of Grand Prix road racing. Unfortunately, that all came to an abrupt end at Guzzi in 1957 when both they and Gilera withdrew because of the declining motorcycle market. The story behind that incident is told here for the first time, together with many other previously undisclosed details.

"This was not the end of the story though. In the next decade Moto Guzzi attacked a completely new branch of motorcycle sport: the International Six Days Trial. Here you can read how they fared.

"Today Moto Guzzi form an important part of the De Tomaso empire, in which they continue to produce single-cylinder bikes which are every bit as high-tech as their Far Eastern rivals."

This book is absolutely chock full of photos, many taken on various racing circuits, others are from the promotions department, and others taken in the factory. Also has many mechanical diagrams. Appendices present mechanical specifications for each model and year, carburetor settings and retail prices in the U.K.

Presents a wonderful history of the company, its products and racing heritage. I highly recommend this book!

Donkey Driving
By A Customer
Donkey Driving by Ellis and Claxton offers completely sound and comprehensive advice to the beginning driver. Even if donkeys are not the intended driving equine, the advice is still excellent. It covers the various training methods needed, plus harness, vehicle styles, and activities. Altogether quite wonderful, and has the addition of a tiny bit of donkey humor. I have recommended it more than any other driving text.

Modern African Wars (1) 1965-80 : Rhodesia (Men at Arms Series, 183), by Peter Abbott, Philip Botham

The Rhodesian War of 1965–80 is the battle for control of present day Zimbabwe. The former British colony of Southern Rhodesia rejected British moves towards majority rule and on 11 November 1965 the Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith announced his country's Unilateral Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. That act sparked a series of violent encounters between the traditional colonial army and the African guerilla insurgents of the Patriotic Front. This book examines the successes and failures of the counter-insurgency campaign of Smith's security forces and the eventual bloody birth of a modern African nation.

Excellent study
By James D. Crabtree
This book looks at the efforts of the Rhodesian armed forces to protect itself from Soviet- and Chinese-sponsored insurgents attempting to overthrow the white-dominated government. It includes a thumbnail sketch of the conflict, from the establishment of the colony by Cecil Rhodes to the attempts by the British government to hand over control of the state lock, stock and barrel to the Marxists to the unilateral declaration of independence. Rhodesia became a republic and tried to buy time for itself to develop as a multiracial state. However, the insurgents were determined to take over Rhodesia by force... when they weren't fighting amongst themselves. Some information is also provided on the ZIPRA and ZANLA guerillas.

As in other books produced by Osprey this slim volume provides an outline of how the war was conducted, sections on Rhodesian Army units such as the Selous Scouts and the Rhodesian African Rifles and their roles, and some material on the Rhodesian Air Force. It is well-illustrated with photographs, drawings and color plates. An excellent addition to anyone's African military library.

Rhodesia Bush War
By K.Schneider
A another great book put out by Osprey (actaully 3 book series on Africa). Volume 1 is on the Rhodesia Bush War 1965-1980.
This 48 page booket is full of historical text, photo's, drawings and techincal data. It is a great intro book into the wars of Africa which have been fought form 1960 until the present. It is one of the best small book I have read with alot of into packed into a book. Great book at any price.

Good text, unbiased but with disappointing color plates.
By Filipe
This book gives a good overview of the conflict, focusing only on what is important and detailing the units and major actions. The authors' prose is delightful, making it hard to drop the book once you start reading it. For its size, Peter Abbott and Philip Botham did manage to put a lot of useful information on this 48 page MAA.

Unfortunately, as this book is from 1986, all photographs are Black&White. The authors did a decent job at presenting the Rhodesian badges and insignias, but missed the opportunity to add the famous badges of the RLI, the SAS and the Selous Scouts as insets on the plates.

Another problem is Peter Abbott's preference for showing walking out and cerimonial uniforms at the expense of combat uniforms, and the appearence of the plates do not reflect the actual appearence of the fighting men while "in the bush". The single biggest mistake of this book is to have only one plate of an RLI "Troupie", and using the Army Greens instead of the usual shorts with chest pouches and the typical field cap modelled after the French "Bigeard cap", with the Rhodesians using both locally manufactured and Portuguese ones. This fault is worsened by Abbott's choice to include a Zambian soldier in cerimonial dress; a plate that is very detached from the subject.

Another major blunder was to add Joshua N'Komo as a plate. Also, only two guerrillas are depicted, none using the almost universal "ChiCom" chest pouches, which is not depicted in any plate at all! The Selous Scout in plate C3 is unconvincing, as every picture about this unit shows heavily bearded men and they were nicknamed "Armpits" because of that, and the soldier depicted completely lacks facial hair. The regimental history of the Selous Scouts, as presented in this book, neglects the contribution of the Portuguese PIDE in its formation. Most plates are unarmed, and the SAS trooper is only depicted in his walking-out dress. The SAS and the RLI had to use AT guns in External Operations, so it would have been sensible to depict at least one AT operator. There is also a complete absence of Chinese advisors, that had a more important contribution to the war effort than the Zambian soldier in parade dress in plate F3. Also, Mugabe received North Korean advisors after the end of the war, and those advisors trained the Zimbabwe Army in its fight agains RENAMO (also neglected in the plates).

Overall, a very good primer, with a clear and very readable text, but disappointing in terms of color plates. A solid four stars.
