A seminal work in information systems design and development
By A Customer
In the 1940s, automation in the Welsh coal mines resulted in a decrease, not an increase, in productivity. In the 1950s General Motors opened a new, highly-automated automobile plant that couldn't turn out any cars because the workers wouldn't show up to work in it. These two cases were among the earliest applications of sociotechnical systems analysis: the concept that the most effective work system is not that with the most efficient technical systems but that with the best balance of the technical and the social systems that results in the greatest actual productivity. The three key principles of socio-tech are:
1. Introduction of technology changes the entire work system. Therefore you should design the new work system first and then design the technology to accomplish the desired change.
2. Technology is only cost effective if it fundamentally changes the work sytem to reduce non-value-added work and increase the productivity of the outcomes of the organization, not just production of the artifacts of how things were done before.
3. Technically efficient tools are not the goal; we are after a total work system that enables productive workers.
Information Technology and Organisational Change by British author Ken Eason (hence the British spelling of "organisational") is a seminal work in applying the concepts of sociotechnical systems analysis to information systems. He starts with an analysis of the information age, and discusses the fact that, unlike the agriculture age and the industrial age, the information age is being shaped by millions of individual system design decisions, and that most of these decisions are being made based on local efficiency with little thought to the age that is being created. He prescribes sociotechnical analysis as one remedy for this tendency.
This is followed with a review of the ways in which information systems might add value to an organization, and one by one shows how the potential is difficult to realize, leaving us with only tho! se uses of information technology that create fundamental change in the entire work system as being worth the investment of time, talent, and money. In this he echoes strongly Michael Hammer's work showing business-intensive systems as being where 80% or more of our systems development efforts should go. A review of traditional, structured, participative, and end-used design and development methods helps the project sponsor to pick the design method best suited to the organisational change s/he desires.
The remaining eight chapters of this book work through designing the process, forming the design team, and the steps of doing sociotechnical design ,development, and implementation. In using this book with graduate-level classes in business information systems, it is generally conceded that the language and the newness of ideas make it a difficult book to read, but that the material covered make it worth the effort.

Men at Arnhem, by Geoffrey Powell

In the fall of 1944, Allied commanders planned to land airborne divisions in an attempt to capture a series of bridges behind German lines, including the "bridge too far" at Arnhem. Geoffrey Powell, himself a veteran of the Arnhem operation, drew on conversations with many other survivors of the battle to write one of the most dramatic of all accounts of the battle

When the book was first published in 1976 under a pseudonym, it was at once recognized as one of the finest evocations of an infantryman's war ever written.

Review
Major Geoffrey Powell led "C" Company of the 156th Parachute Battalion at Arnhem, later commanding the remnants of that Battalion in the fighting around Oosterbeek before bringing them across the Rhine in grand style when the 1st Airborne Division was ordered to withdraw. Originally written under the pseudonym of Tom Angus, Men at Arnhem is a semi-fictional account of the role that Powell played; the names used are an invention and a little of the chronology has been altered in the interests of a smoother narrative, but all of the events portrayed are quite real and give a most vivid account of Powell's experiences. Yet this book is much more than one man's story, as it brilliantly describes life in a typical parachute rifle company during this most difficult and bloody of battles, and it is for these insights into the lot of the ordinary infantryman that it has rightly been acclaimed a classic. Mark Hickman - Pegasus Archive

About the Author
Colonel Geoffrey Powell is a respected military historian, whose many published work includes, 'The Devil's Birthday'. He fought at Arnhem with the Green Howards and was awarded the Military Cross.

A Gripping Tale of Combat
By A Customer
Geoffrey Powell describes his experiences during the British fight at Arnhem. He packs emotion into every sentence. Powell, as a company commander, readily admits mistakes he made in battle and the pain he experienced as a result of those mistakes shows in his words. His detailed desciptions of moments on the battlefield resonate with the reader long after the book is finished. The suffering and sacrifice endured by the British Paratroopers comes to life in this book. If you liked any of the American Airborne books by Donald Burgett or Ross Carter, you will love this book.

Engrossing account of the Arnhem battle
By E. Totleben, Jr.
There aren't many books out there which cover this aspect of the Arnhem battle. As a company commander, Capt. Powell gives a fascinating account of the British efforts to reinforce Major John Frosts 2nd Battalion on the Arnhem bridge. Forced back by the Germans, his unit then becomes part of the Oosterbeek perimeter. He gives gripping accounts of the different battlefield scenarios his unit adapts to from the open fields to the urban streets and houses. All along the way he sees his unit and close friends slowly whittled down by battlefield attrition. When it's decided that the 1st Airborne should withdraw, he gives the reader a suspenseful account of the nighttime escape through the pouring rain and encounters with the Germans, finally reaching safety across the Rhine. This book is a must read for anyone with an interest in the battle or the view from the front line soldier.

In this worthy addition to Opsrey's Men-at-Arms series, Bryan Fosten examines all aspects of Wellington's infantry, including army life, organisation, uniforms, drill, regimental distinctions, weapons and equipment, in an engaging text well-illustrated throughout including eight full page colour plates by the author himself.

Wellington's Peninsular and Waterloo infantry...
By HMS Warspite
"Wellington's Infantry (2)" is the second of two Osprey Men at Arms Series books on the infantry units commanded by the Duke of Wellington in the Peninsular War in Portugal, Spain and France 1808-1814, and in the Waterloo Campaign of 1815. This volume covers the light infantry units, including the famous 43rd and 52nd Regiments; the Rifle Corps, including the 95th Regiment; the Highland Regiments, including the 42nd (Black Watch) and 92nd (Gordon Highlanders); and finally, a miscellany of West Indian, veteran and garrison units.

The narrative provides a paragraph or two or three about the history of each regiment in the above wars. The text is very nicely supported by some excellent color plates of uniforms, period illustrations, and photographs of clothing items and equipment. This reviewer found especially interesting the depictions of several uniform jackets that have survived the years and that show the modifications made for light troops. At just 40 pages, the book is a quick read, and recommended to students of the uniforms of the era.

Ancient Chinese Armies 1500-200 BC (Men-At-Arms Series, 218), by CJ Peers

By the 15th century BC the valley of Hwang Ho was dominated by a palace-based military caste which owed its supremacy to a monopoly of bronze-working techniques among a still mainly Stone Age population. To the Shang Dynasty, war was a means of legitimising the power of their new aristocracy. This fascinating volume by C. J. Peers covers the period of China's history from the first documented civilisation to the establishment of an enduring unified empire, examining the history, organisation, uniform and weapons of ancient Chinese armies.

A useful book
By Peter Gugerell
The Men-at-arms Series covers ancient and classical China in five books, all by Chris Peers who is very familiar with the subject. This is the first book of this series. The chapters: Chronology -- The Shang dynasty -- The Western Chou -- The Eastern Chou -- The 4th and 3rd centuries -- The Ch'in empire -- Tactical and strategic doctrine -- Ten decisive battles. The text is clearly written and informative, the drawings by Angus McBride are good, only the maps are a bit primitive and not very useful. The follow-up to this book is "Imperial Chinese Armies 200BC - 589AD" (MAA 284).

Bizarre reconstructions
By A Customer
The text by Chris Peers is OK. The bland artwork by McBride is pretty bizarre. The white tentlike hats reconstructed from pictorial representations of the Han period are wrong. They serve no practical function and only add to a woeful catalog of misinterpretations of Oriental representations by Occidental artists.

From the Shang Dynasty to a unified Ch'in Empire
By Anibal Madeira
A thousand years of history, of evolution in concepts of warfare, of tactical innovations and new weapons. A tough endeavor for Dr. Peers, particularly because westerners usually have few basic knowledge of the extremely interesting Chinese culture and history.

Divided by broad chronological periods (Shang, Western and Eastern Chou, 4th and 3rd century BC, the ch'in Empire) and concentrating on the main written and archeological sources, the reader will get an abstract on the main conflicts of those periods and the basic description of weapons and armies of the period. Short descriptions of 10 major engagements, tactical doctrine, sieges and fortifications and some particularities of several kingdoms military characteristics or personalities are also provided.

Some data will stand out: The use of bronze to make weapons even so late as the 3rd century BC, the early use of the crossbow and the inability of "barbarians" to replicate the trigger mechanism, the military literature, the human sacrifices and "hunting expeditions" popular in the Shang period, the chariot being used in the Han period although in the process of being replaced by cavalry. In so many ways they were more advanced then contemporary Romans and Greeks and in so many others they were so far from them.

Very good photos of artifacts from the British Museum (but the author could use more sources), and nice color plates (not the best) from Angus McBride. Maps provided for each period with political divisions and main cities (like a previous reviewer commented, they aren't great looking - this book was originally printed in 1990 and the maps reflect it very well - but they fulfill the role of providing the reader a geographical reference and political evolution of the several kingdoms).

Omaha Beach: V Corps' Battle for the Normandy Bridgehead (Battleground Europe), by Tim KilvertJones

As the left most inland flank of the D-Day landings, Sword Beach was thought most likely to receive the first German counterattacks. The British troops selected for the assault had the tasks of securing the beach and advancing on the heavily defended medieval town of Caen. The troops also were determined to link up with British paratroopers and glider units who had landed the night before on special missions and were not equipped to withstand an armored counterattack alone.

Backed up by an impressive array of modified armored vehicles, the veteran 3rd Division, spearheaded by No. 4 Army Commando and 41 Royal Marine Commando, stormed ashore and secured its objectives with moderate casualties. No. 4 Commando also reached the airborne troops before they could be overwhelmed by German armor. However, the British failed to secure the key town of Caen on schedule.

The action on this Normandy beach is now covered in all the detail that has become standard with the Battleground Europe series.

Very technical but great read. Better understanding and appreciation of what Americans went through and just barely making it. because of the valor and determination of those on the beach. Looking forward to reading additional Kilvert-Jones books re Normandy.

Normandy: Omaha Beach
By William T. Bowers
Having just returned from the Normandy beaches, I found that this book is essential for anyone who visits the battlefield, either by actually walking the ground, or even vicariously by reading in the comfort of your own home. The author, Tim Kilvert-Jones, provides concise, but essential, background material on the strategic setting in 1944, German defensive plans and organization, Allied invasion plans, and the Allied air and naval operations that preceded the invasion. Of particular note is the key role played in Allied planning by intelligence, terrain analysis, weather, and deception operations. The core of the book is a tour of the three main sections of Omaha Beach: Pointe du Hoc and the tactical sectors of the 29th and 1st Infantry Divisions. For each area, Kilvert-Jones has selected excellent vantage points that allow one to view the terrain. The instructions for reaching each vantage point and for driving about the battlefield are clear and accurate. For each vantage point, the author provides detailed descriptions of the actions that occurred there; the narrative is exciting and fast-paced. The tour of each part of the battlefield is supported by excellent maps and photos. This book should appeal to veterans, military professionals, and anyone interested in getting a close-up view of this historically significant battleground.

Good Military Analysis and Synthesis
By R. A Forczyk
Writing a tour guide and historical synopsis of the US landing at Omaha Beach on 6 June 1944 is a daunting task, but one well executed by Sandhurst graduate Tim Kilvert-Jones in this Battleground Europe volume. Like other volumes in this series on the D-Day landings, Omaha Beach only focuses on the actions that occurred on and around that particular landing site. Overall, Omaha Beach is an excellent summary of the US V Corps landings on D-Day, as well as a decent tour-guide of the contemporary battlefield.
Omaha Beach consists of seven chapters, beginning with a strategic overview and a full chapter on the Overlord plan relating to Omaha and Pointe du Hoc. The third chapter covers the loading and sea passage. The three main chapters cover the Ranger assault at Pointe du Hoc, the 29th Division landing and the 1st Division landing. An epilogue chapter covers events following D-Day, primarily the Allied logistical build-up on Omaha. There are also six appendices but no order of battle for either side. As usual in Battleground Europe titles, numerous excellent photographs complement the text, but the maps are not as good in this volume as in other volumes in the series.
While Kilvert-Jones does utilize and synthesize information from other accounts, such as Joseph Balkoski's excellent Beyond the Beachhead and Robert J Kershaw's D-Day Piercing the Atlantic Wall, he offers value-added material in terms of his expertise as a retired regular army officer. This book is designed as a professional learning tool for young officers on a staff ride of the Normandy battlefields - a tool I wish that I had as a captain when I made such a staff ride in 1989 - and as such, it offers many useful insights for those who wish to study the art of war as related to Omaha Beach. The author effectively addresses the mission, the enemy, the troops available, the weather and the operational time line.
There are two areas where the author does come up short in his military analysis, in my opinion. First, is the issue of terrain. While the author correctly identifies the draws leading off the beach as key terrain he fails to complete the equation. The fact is that both the Germans and Americans had identified the draws as key terrain and acted upon it, is one of the key reasons for the heavy casualties on Omaha. The Germans could only man the defenses on Omaha with a reinforced battalion at any one time, and they chose to concentrate their defenses on resistance nests covering each of the four draws. Only a few snipers and obstacles were left to cover the area between draws, and this area comprised dead space to the heavy weapons sited in most of the resistance nests. Thus, the main German engagement areas were in front of the draws, which is precisely where the Americans landed. The Americans headed strait for the draws because they optimistically assumed that the preliminary air and naval bombardment would smash the resistance nests and obstacles, allowing the landing troops to move rapidly off the beach through these defiles. Thanks to Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, many Americans are now convinced that all of Omaha Beach was a slaughterhouse. Not true. As Kilvert-Jones notes, some troops landing inadvertently in the dead space between the draws and they were able to reach the bluffs virtually unscathed. The failure of the Americans to appreciate the significance of dead space (since virtually all the German bunkers were identified before the landing) on Omaha Beach was as serious defect in terrain analysis as their failure to anticipate the defensive value of bocage. Had the US troops landed between the draws, hundreds of lives would have been saved.
The second issue that Kilvert-Jones skirts around is that of senior American generalship and planning. There is no doubt that the troops in the 1st and 29th Divisions were well-served by the superior combat leadership of men like BGN Cota and COL Taylor on D-Day, but these were not the men who planned the landings on Omaha. Rather, the inferior leadership and lack of imagination of General Bradley and General Eisenhower are the issue. Whenever one studies Overlord, it is difficult not to be impressed by the incredible logistic planning that went into moving thousands of troops across the sea, as well as technical marvels like PLUTO and MULBERRY and the incredibly successful deception plan. On the strategic level, Overlord was a masterpiece. Yet at the tactical level, particularly at Omaha, Overlord seems to have been planned by men who ignored every lesson of the last thirty years. Bradley rejected British offers of armored "funnies" from the 79th Armored that were far superior at obstacle removal under fire than dismounted engineers - who suffered 41% casualties on Omaha. Nor would Bradley consider using Underwater Demolition Teams or amphibious tractors as used in Pacific invasions. Bradley never really thought about how troops could cross 300-400 meters of open sand under fire from interlocking machinegun nests - a basic lesson learned from the First World War. The fire support plan for Omaha ignored the use of smoke, which would have greatly reduced the accuracy of German fire. Although often described as an excellent tactician, Bradley clearly was not. Indeed, the divisional leaders in the 1st and 29th Divisions questioned the landing plan, but were over-ruled by Bradley who didn't want a plan complicated by gadgets or fancy tactics. Kilvert-Jones mentions the irony of Bradley considering a withdrawal as his troops were actually getting off the beach and Eisenhower was planning a mass air strike to demonstrate how out-of-touch these "leaders" were. After the battle, Eisenhower blamed the "intelligence failure" in detecting the German 352nd Division at Omaha as the primary reason for the heavy casualties. In fact, the American GIs triumphed at Omaha in spite of, not because of, their senior leadership.

Superlative insight into this superlative combat unit
By Maggot
I had seen a documentary or two over the decades about the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) but I never fully appreciated their contributions to the enhancement and furtherance of the Special Air Service (SAS) and Special Boat Service! I also had no real appreciation for their efforts in Albania and Yugoslavia! Even more remarkably, much of this was accomplished by New Zealanders and Rhodesians. The author writes this book from a "memoirs" perspective and does a very good job. Anyone who fails to look up to the LRDG as equals to the SAS or SBS within their mission set fails to appreciate just what the LRDG did for the British in WW II. Also, any US Special Forces student needing to better gain an appreciation for school exercise "Robin Sage" needs to read the latter half of this book...very clear and unmistakable linkage to what the LRDG went through in Yugoslavia and Albania. The one obvious shortcoming was a lack of maps! While the actual soldiers often operated without meaningful maps, to follow it I had to use Google Earth and then I could better appreciate the distances and depths behind enemy lines.

A tribute to the men, from the commonwealth countries, of the LRDG, in harsh desert conditions.
An excellent well written book.

Well written biography
By Dr Marcus
This is a fascinating read, written as it is by a former LRDG patrol leader. Even though it is in the shape of a chronological unit story (rather than a more theoretically induced analysis) it is a must read for anyone interested in early special operations forces and the LRDG. Contains information about cooperation between the LRDG and the SAS. Recommended.
