About the Author
Gordon L Rottman entered the US Army in 1967, volunteered for Special Forces and completed training as a weapons specialist. He was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group until reassigned to the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in 1969-70. He entered the Texas Army National Guard in 1974 and was the full-time Operations Sergeant of 2nd Bn., 143rd Inf., 36th Airborne Brigade until 1980, when he assumed a similar position with Co. G (Ranger), 143rd Inf. Reverting to part-time status in 1986, he is now the Opposing Forces Group Operations Sergeant in the Army Reserve's 75th Manoeuvre Area Command in Houston. He is a civilian contract Special Operations Forces Intelligence Specialist at the Army's Joint Readiness Centre, Ft Polk.

Thorough, Meticulous and fascinating!

The author - a former Special Forces Soldier and combat veteran himself has done a fine job in presenting the Special Forces of the world in an interest and informative manner. A must read for anyone researching the Special Forces of the world - their missions and capabilities.
The book is written with an understanding that comes from being an insider to the SF community as well as a long time soldier. It is not only a fascinating read - it is also a valuable research tool. Highly recommended!

Excellent reading on early Special Forces history

Gordon Rottman is retired Special Forces and does a thorough job of covering early Special Forces history back to the days of the OSS and the WWII Ranger Battilions. He shows the different paths of development that have evolved into todays Green Berets and Ranger Battalions. There is good coverage given to the uniforms, various unit flashes and insignia on the color plates.
A worthwhile read for anyone interested in Special Forces history.

Much better than the Burke's average

Intended as a companion volume to _Burke's Guide to the Royal Family,_ this product of the "new Burke's" follows the familiar indented-outline format and is very easy to use. The early history of each House is only summarized, but is complete from the sixteenth century or so. Families that are "temporarily out of business" make up the bulk of the book, including portraits of the current pretenders (up to c.1980, anyway). Much readable anecdotal material, and the Introduction has some salty comments on the observed results of replacing hereditary monarchy with "mob democracy." An excellent and trustworthy source for ready-reference.

This book covers a broad topic, and is therefore not extremely thorough. It still gives a good bit of useful text for its small size. Generally speaking the plates are good, but they have nothing on Angus McBride. The book covers the following topics, usually devoting one or several pages to each:

The Armies of Outremer (Christian territory centered on Jerusalem)

The Military Orders (like the Templars and Hospitallers, and some lesser known groups)

The Iberian Armies (El Cid and the Reconquista covers this topic in much greater detail)

Byzantine Armies (extremely brief)

Abbasid Armies (Armies of the Abbasid Caliphate of Baghdad)

Moorish Armies (the Armies of Islamic Spain)

Seljuk Armies (Turkish warriors during the Crusades)

Fatimid Armies (Egyptian Muslim forces)

Ayyubid Armies (those of Salah al-Din and the Battle of Hattin)

Mamluk Armies (Turkish slave mercenaries at the end of the Crusading period)

Like most of the books in this series, the information in them is very basic and does not go into very deep detail. Good as an introduction though. Also has excellent color pictures that show you how the knights dressed. A quick and easy read.

About the Author
The works of Derek Kidner (MA, Christ's College, Cambridge) are full of the marks of both professor and pastor with his even­handed scholarship as well as his devotional insight. These qualities have made his commentaries in the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary series and The Bible Speaks Today series some of the most beloved and popular of recent decades. Kidner had a long career in both the church and the academy in England. He studied at Cambridge University and then served in the ministry for several years before becoming a senior tutor at Oak Hill Theological College. Kidner began his writing career while serving as warden of Tyndale House in Cambridge from 1964 to 1978, publishing his ninth and final book, The Message of Jeremiah, in 1987.

Good little commentary

Though this commentary isn't as exhaustive as some commentaries, I still found it to be very useful. If you don't need to go super in depth or you are just looking for some quick information than this commentary will work for you. If you want something a little deeper I would suggest NICOT's Ezra an Nehemiah by Fensham.The Books of Ezra and Nehemiah (New International Commentary on the Old Testament)

Good commentary, but brief

The commentary is very helpful, but very brief. It is not overly academic, but informs the reader of important technical facts as to history and the text. The author also writes from a spiritual viewpoint and not just an academic treatise. I would recommend the book for anyone who is looking for a brief commentary on Ezra and Nehemiah that is not just a dry scholarly work.
