About the Author
Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) was born in Wales. He was a dairyman's assistant, a political enthusiast, debater, and chief clinical assistant to Sir Thomas Harder, the King's Physician. But at the age of 27 he gave up a most promising medical career to become a preacher. He had a far-reaching influence through his ministry at Westminster Chapel in London, England from 1938-68. His published works have had an unprecedented circulation, selling in millions of copies.

Perhaps the greatest Christian classic of the 20th century!

First published in 1970, this collection of 17 Bible studies on Romans 3:24 through 4:25 was first preached at London's Westiminster Chapel in 1957. Welsh teacher and evangelist Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones expounds the text (although he uses the King James Bible, he is in fact basing his remarks on the Greek original) not only verse-by-verse, but word-by-word, extracting all the deep theological meaning and also all the wonderfully edifying spiritual truth from these difficult, but most rewarding verses. In the first half of the book Lloyd-Jones takes the reader through Paul's teaching on atonement, redemption and justification, clearly explaining what the Apostle meant, examining and comparing parallel passages, quoting support from evangelical theologians (including from some of the 'Puritans' of the 17th century) and refuting the 'modernistic' views of certain 20th century theologians, of whom C. H. Dodd seems to come off worst. But Lloyd-Jones wouldn't have been Lloyd-Jones if he hadn't made sure that all this theological 'meat' had not been seasoned with plenty of practical application. And it is this practical aspect which dominates the second half of the book, where Lloyd-Jones expounds Romans 4, considering it first and foremost to consist of illustrations of what it means to live the life of faith as a person justified before God. This leads to some superb teaching on faith in connection with Abraham and how he believed God for a son despite being himself impotent and Sarah beyond the age of childbearing: here is genuine miracle-working faith in God's promises, the kind of faith that brings forth a whole supernatural people of God!

Perhaps what I have written sounds difficult. Let me say that reading Lloyd-Jones is not difficult, although one should take one's time over his words and mull them over before reading on. Personally, I have read this book any number of times and consider it to be perhaps the greatest Christian classic of the 20th century. It certainly helped me to understand the very basics of my faith, giving me the kind of 'firm foundation' which every Christian needs in time of trial. Very highly recommended indeed!

Lloyd Jones has it right

Dr. Jones has a unique abiltiy to get to the meaning of difficult issues found in the doctrines of Atonement, Justification, Justification by Faith and Righteousness. When a someone understands Romans, they know what it means to be a Christian. We have used the book in a bible study and it has deepened everyone's knowledge and faith in Christ. This book would be great for those who are somewhat fuzzy about what it means to be a Christian.

Richard W. Unger is Professor of History at the University of British Columbia. He is also author of A History of Brewing in Holland, 900-1900: Economy, Technology, and the State, The Art of Medieval Technology: Images of Noah the Shipbuilder, and The Ship in the Medieval Economy, 600-1600.

in depth review on seating

Really good book with a great deal of quality content - but it is aimed more at specialists and those involved in designing, researching or evaluating seating than those wanting to figure out "what chair to buy for their home office". Even so, it is a well known, highly cited book with contributors from around the world that provide a broad range of perspectives on the seating research. JH

About the Author
Ian Knight is widely regarded as a leading international expert on the Anglo-Zulu War. He has written, co-written or edited over 30 books. He studied Afro-Caribbean Studies at Kent University, and is an Honorary Research Associate of the Natal Museum and Vice President of the Anglo Zulu War Historical Society. In 2000, he was the Historian advising the Glasgow University team who made the first archaeological survey of the Isandlwana battlefield. He lives in Sussex, UK.

Armies of 19th Century Africa

This Osprey volume covers a somewhat miscellaneous collection of enemies faced by Britain in the mid-late 19th Century from Egypt to Kenya, notable among them being the fearsome Asantes, the Abyssinians, and the fanatical Muslim Madhists, as well as some minor tribes and the following of the rebel Egyptian leader Ahmed 'Urabi.

The text provides good coverage of the often inadequate arms of these peoples as well as their respective fighting styles, and the how's and when's of their surpressions. The color plates particularly impressed me as well, being very life-like and colorful.

I have this oldie. This is a potted look at some of the enemies that faced the Victorian army. Although useful as a primer, it is best to double check the artistic renditions of some of the protagonists as I note the following:- the Chinese script which adorn two of the illustrations is nonsensical; the Iban Warrior H3 wears a loincloth with the wrong design which are termed "pua kumbu". It is these inaccuracies which give me pause as to the accuracy of the other drawings. Some of the drawings look good but the crumpled look in some of the fabric is overdone.

The best adventure stories are the ones that are true

Seeing no reviews here, I thought I would add my take. I have had this book for many years, and I keep coming back to it periodically to refresh the stories in my mind. This book chronicles a good cross section of the hazardous life of a B-17 bomber crew over Nazi Europe. There are stories of survival and loss in this book that are made more amazing by the fact that it is all true. You can't make this stuff up. The 8th Air Force took a horrific beating while flying strategic missions over a very powerful and aggressive Nazi resistance. There are photos throughout the book of planes so torn apart by enemy action that they never flew again, but somehow made it back to England. There are also the sad stories of the demise of many hundreds and thousands of planes. The life expectancy of a B-17 crew was less than the length of their tour of duty, but they kept flying. Thousands of airmen were lost among the bomber crews over Germany, but the formations kept coming, nearly daily. The planes came by the hundreds, and even in excess of 1000 planes on many missions. Can you imagine looking up to see over 1000 planes in the sky at the same time, in tight formation? Bomber streams over 5 miles long, and also miles high. We'll never see that again. Can you imagine bringing home a plane so badly torn up in the air that the crew had to resort to tying sections together with parachute harnesses just to make it home? Can you imagine manning a machine gun in an open waist window at 30,000 feet in temperatures around 30 below zero? On a 6 to 8 hour mission?

I pray along with countless others that we never need to witness this kind of bloodshed again, but I also say prayers of thanks that men like these were there when they were called to service.

this is probably the best book about the wonderful Flying Fortresses . .. . my husband flew in one in WWII and he recommended this book to everyone, also bought copies for all the boys in the family.
