Eighteenth-century British gentleman farmer Jethro Tull (1674-1741) is popularly regarded as the inventor of the seed drill, widely cited by agricultural historians, soil scientists and school history textbooks alike. Whether Tull was in fact the first to experiment with a mechanical seed drill and the horse-drawn cultivators drilling made possible is doubtful, but he did do much to make their acceptance in the long run more widespread. What is less well known is that Tull's mechanical innovations were accompanied by a theory of plant nutrition-and a social agenda-that were equally important to the adoption of the new machines. Although he came to be celebrated by later generations, Tull's work attracted fierce critics in his own day and immediately after, not least because he categorically rejected the value of manures in maintaining soil fertility. Instead, he proposed a mechanistic theory of plant nutrition in which the stirring of the soil with the cultivator could substitute for the processes of decomposition thought to be contributed by manures, with less labor and expense. For Tull, the drill was part of an explicit strategy to minimize reliance on an unruly labor force. He also directly challenged the idea that Virgil and other classical authorities could be of any practical use in farm management. In other words, Tull was an anti-georgic improver, and could only be reinserted into the canon of agricultural history through the efforts of later agriculturists to gloss over the objectionable parts of his work. This paper explores how, a century before Liebig, Tull's Horse-Hoeing Husbandry (1731 and later editions) sparked heated debates over a constellation of issues that are still with us today: no-till vs. tillage, net profits vs. gross yields, soil biology vs. soil chemistry, yield per acre vs. yield per unit of labor, rotation costs vs. input costs.

A strange, apologetic summary of Tull

While most books about famous people are either laudatory or condemnatory, this one is completely undecided. I couldn't determine if the author himself felt this way, or was trying for balance. Tull is known for his seed-drill and horse-hoe, which are forerunners of today's havesters, plows, and other farming machinery. This book gives a strange biography, descriptions of seed drills and other implements prior to Tull's work, a brief account of Tull's book and its immediate results, and finally a description of some modern farming equipment. The whole is written in a verbose apologetic manner, as if the author is fearful that either the pro-Tull or anti-Tull contingent will attack him if he says something too plainly or too boldly.
There is useful information here, but it was a chore to find it.

I must admit, like the reader from Bloomington, I too was shocked at the virtuosity of Jethro Tull's output. It is one thing to be an original classic rock icon and contribute so much in that genre, but to help be responsible for a revolution in agriculture as well?
Who knew Ian Anderson was such a renaissance man?

A lot of information here about Jethro Tull I was completely unaware of. Still, the less obscure stuff ought to have been covered too; I mean, a Jethro Tull book that doesn't even once mention "Agualung"? Come ON!

This is the best bio of Crowley I've ever read

Crowley was someone I was always interested in but could never get a good handle on because everything about him was either vilifying him in the extreme or hero worshiping him. And, as Wilson points out clearly in this slim volume, much can be deciphered from his autobiography (Confessions), but maybe not what Crowley was trying to convey. Thankfully, in Wilson we have a first rate researcher we can rely on.

After reading this very short volume, I feel like I have a good grasp of what actually went on in Crowley's life. A lot of the mystery is gone and I am grateful for that. I especially appreciated Wilson's well-rounded research regarding the poets of the day, etc. which points out several aspects of Crowley's character and humanizes the legend in a way that actually brings him down to earth, quite unlike Kaczynski's "Perdurabo" and Regardie's "Legend of Aleister Crowley." Wilson's book, I feel has cut right to the heart of it all. Of all the things I have read about Crowley in the past, nothing paints a clearer and more obvious picture than this. Regardie's "Legend of Aleister Crowley" is equally short, but manages to build up the legend a great deal. Kaczynski's "Perdurabo" appears to be an attempt to humanize Crowley, but it comes across as something of hero worship, anyway. K's book reads more like a detailed explanation for all his bad behaviors and with the unwritten message underscoring it all that his life was a triumph against these odds.

If I had read Wilson's book first, I probably wouldn't have read much more about Crowley, actually, which would have at least saved me some time. I spent quite a few years trying to figure out if he was a "good guy" or a "bad guy" before I finally decided the question was irrelevant and began to just focus on his body of work. Well, this book actually makes the question relevant again, in my opinion, and certainly painted his body of work in a different light.

Crowley was an interesting person and he certainly created an interesting legend for himself, but after reading this, I think I am finally satisfied that I understand what was going on here. I'm not sure if I'll bother finishing Kaczynski's "Perdurabo" now. It's just so long and dry in its details, yet has missed so many of the nuances of this short little book.

Balanced and thought-provoking

If you can find a copy of this (seems to be out of print), and are interested in Crowley and/or Wilson, GRAB it. Like most books by Wilson, there is almost as much information about the author as there is about the subject. He tells how he became interested in Crowley and the occult, gives his views on other writers' studies, etc. Some readers may be annoyed by that, but with such a controversial subject it is really refreshing, honest, and one has few doubts about where Wilson is coming from. He started as a sceptic but years of study turned him into a semi-believer in occult phenomena. He therefore respects much of what Crowley tried to do while also pointing out the areas where he feels Crowley's personality prevented him from taking his experiments and creative activities further. You may disagree here and there but but will be very entertained, stimulated, and well-informed. Plus the book is rather short, and leaves you wanting more ... and so after reading this (if you enjoy it), you should go on to "The Occult" by Wilson, plus "Perdurabo" by Kaczynski and "A Magick Life" by Booth, two more detailed biographical studies of Crowley, and/or his own "Confessions." Plus Crowley's many magickal studies. But this is a good place to start because it is neither worshipful nor disdainful.

Well Written, But Crowley Isn't Worth the Trouble

I'm sorry, but I hate to see Crowley getting all this attention. He was an interesting guy, but the world is full of alcoholics and drug addicts and many of them were intelligent, interesting people. He was a charismatic leader, like Jim Jones or Charles Manson. Unlike either of them, Crowley was never able to muster up more than 20 or so people at one time or another who'd follow him, and his ego drove most of them away. (Crowley would crap on peoples' floors, claiming his s*** was holy, like a Chinese noble. He spent the money he sponged off of them on cigars and booze.)

So far we're describing a garden variety sociopath, like Hunter Thompson, or Keith Richards. He believed that he was creating a new religion, and in Wilson's words, the equivalent of St. Paul or Mohammed. So far he's probably more highly regarded now than he's ever been. But even now his following amounts to a tiny portion of the population and I doubt any of the Temples to his faith will be mobbed. I realize that there are people who greatly admire him. Sorry, I can't see it. My opinion. Come and get me.

Interesting though incomplete

This is a wonderful book detailing English Civil War infantry...a typical Osprey offering. Color plates are nice but far from thorough. Those looking for detailed regimental uniform histories will be disappointed - this is an overview and gives you the flavor of the era not the specifics. That being said it is interesting and a fascinating basic look at the period. The drawings for my taste fall below the typical Osprey standard but are adequate. Please note: campaigns, battles and detailed tactics are not covered - primarily a uniform guide.

Great Resource for Living History

I own both this volume and volume 2 which covers English Civil War Cavalry. They are both part of the Osprey Men-At-Arms series. These books are not history books per say as they are not accounts of persons, places and events, but rather they detail the clothing, weapons and equipment of the Royalist and Parliamentarian infantry during the English Civil War as well as providing details on troop training, recruitment, and regimental and company structure. The illustrations are very detailed and by themselves are a wonderful resource especially for re-enactors.

Introduction to Huguenot genealogy

This book covers some of the basic history of the Huguenots and their settlement areas in Great Britain and later in North America and South Africa.
It discusses the records from the United Kingdom which can assist a researcher in tracing Huguenots. Everything from Probate to Livery Company records are discussed. In addition, a brief chapter is included on research sources in France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland.
This is a good introductory book, particularly if you suspect that your Huguenots passed through Britain in their travels.

How did I get so lucky?

I feel like I found a treasure! This is a very old book and it has a wealth of information in it about the Huguenots. I'm using this along with a "Great Courses" course on the Reformation in order to find out about my ancestory. It's difficult to trace then because of the wars, massacres, and burning of churches where the records were held. This book is great about putting it in context. It's difficult if you don't know the history of France. The author gives just enough background information to hlep create a context. If you are totally clueless about the history of France like me, it might be good to back it up with further reading, but this really is a fantastic resource. I'm thrilled to have found this.
