Great Book for Wargamers

This book is great for wargamers and others interested in two of the key German forces in WW II's Battle of the Bulge. Kampfgruppe Peiper is shown with great detail as to what types and quantities of tanks and troops were at specific places at specific times. The battles at Stoumont and La Gleize are well documented and the writing style will put you in the heat of battle. You will want to supplement this fine book with another Osprey title, The Ardennes Offensive,VI Panzer Armee.

Intriguing Part of the Battle of the Bulge

When I was ten and began building models of tanks from WW2, I wished I could afford an Osprey book based on the vehicle or the battles it fought. The illustrated publisher's quick histories, full-color artwork plates, maps and photographs are unique and entertaining. They, more often than not, provide a great entry point to a particular piece of history (though sometimes the authors have more passion than expertise).

This particular work unveiled an aspect of the Battle of the Bulge that I was not entirely clear on. Hitler commissioned SS Commando Otto Skorzeny to create a special unit to disrupt and gain key points behind Allied lines. What made this unique is that they would pass themselves off as Americans wearing US uniforms and using US weapons and vehicles. What I did not know was that this largely failed and the unit was reconstituted into the overall attacking force which then supported Joachim Peiper's Kampfgruppe. I actually confused the massacre at Malmedy thinking that disguised Germans had carried it off but it was actually forward elements of the regular German force.

The work is interesting as it covers the attempt to hobble together English-speaking combatants from the German ranks while scrounging up captured equipment, how they reshaped the hulls of Panther tanks to resemble M10 tank destroyers, used specific markings so they were not engaged by their own troops, and it debates the cause of the Malmedy massacre. The author also disputes the now famous photography of Peiper supposedly checking his progress against a road sign as not being him (I have seen it referenced in so many works as him that this is very curious). Overall, there is decent detail and great photos.

I do worry about Osprey's format overall. They are pricey publications for their length and they need to rethink their offer in this digital world or may lose relevance.

One of the best Osprey books
By illusion buster
To me his is one of the best Osprey books I have seen the color plates alone are almost worth the price of the book. You get 16 armored vehicles, 4 of the vehicles are German armor disguised as American Armor. The German armor yellow seems too light in the plates but other than that they are very well rendered. You also get 9 very well done German soldiers by Ron Volstad. There is also a nice selection of photos for such a short book (64 pages).

You've Been Reading My Dream Journal Again

Have I received this book in the mail yet? No. Am I possibly the biggest fan of imperial expeditions into Afghanistan between the years 1835 and 1989 in this county? Yes. Yes I am.

While I could go into my personal love of this incredibly specific period of history, I realize that nobody wants to read that and I want to copy edit it even less. What I do know is this: Osprey's Men at Arms Series is an incredible resource for any fan of history, militaries, or military history. They have an incredible amount of artwork and first hand photography that is a hassle and a half to hunt down on the internet. Because sometimes you just need a photo of a Pathan ghazi circa 1885-- And it just so happens to be that Osprey is the company that take up the burden and delivers what few other publishers can or will do. The width and breadth of their work is incredible and, I imagine, that #72 in their series is no exception to the rule.

At the very least this book goes incredibly well with my my #107 "British Infantry Equipment 1808-1908" and my #138 "British Cavalry Equipment 1800-1941." If am nothing, I am a man who loves consistency.

The way he conducts himself on the saddle and on the ground proves the intense efforts and training he posseses under his belt over the years. True dedication,,, not an attempt to be popular and written up for fame or profits. A clear and precise knowledge exists in him that has been carefully learned from Egon Von Neindorff. Step by step. Look for the newly in print third edition, also available on this site. Want basics? Here they are, explain to perfection! This book is a wonderful introduction to dressage for the rider who is new to it, and also a fantastic meditation on the art for the experienced dressage rider. Herbermann's love of horses shines through in every line. This book reminded me why I started riding in the first place!

About the Author
Sue Welsh is a freelance webmaster who has contributed to the Resource Discovery Network web site and is now working on their Virtual Training Suite. She previously worked in several medical libraries and was a project worker for OMNI (Organising Medical Networked Information). Betsy Anagnostelis is Librarian at the Royal Free Hospital Medical Library. She has delivered training in using the Internet for health and medical information since the mid-1990s, and has worked with OMNI in developing guidelines for resource evaluation. She is a member of the editorial board of the newsletter, He@lth Information on the Internet, and edits the Innovations Online series for the journal, Health Information and Libraries Journal. Alison Cooke is also based at the Royal Free Hospital Medical Library, where she is currently Information Skills Trainer. She is involved in the OMNI and BIOME projects, including working on the development of the resource evaluation guidelines. She contributes regularly to the newsletter, He@lth Information on the Internet, and writes the 'Internet news and reviews' section of the British Journal of Clinical Governance.
