His interest extends to having personally recreated many of the weapon and armour pieces that the Roman leggionaire would have worn and used at this time.

An unbalanced overview

The book's title is slightly misleading; although the central color plates illustrate representative images from the full range of dates indicated by the reigns cited therein, the text leans the discussion heavily toward the earlier part of the period and Hadrian's Wall in particular. Also, a disclaimer is included stating that much background material (including, presumably, definitions of some military terms used) is to be found in the companion volume, "The Roman Army from Caesar to Trajan."
Relating to the comparatively extensive discussion of helmets, the illustrations are scattered widely and inconveniently throughout the book (sometimes pages after the discussion of their object without any indication an illustration is included, frustrating especially after reading a detailed description) and references are again made to the companion volume. This and other subsections on equipment collectively dwarf other topics such as religion and diet of soldiers.
The author includes some unhelpfully amateurish drawings of his own besides much better photographs of his equipment reconstructions and the illustrator's plates.
The end of this period is treated more fully in Osprey's "Late Roman Infantryman" and "Late Roman Cavalryman," the balance handled in "Imperial Roman Legionary," which I have not seen.

Roman Army Hadrian to Constantine

This member of the Men at Arms series was as informative as its chronological predecessor which I have had for a few years. Especially interesting, as with the previous period and book, is that the author makes arms and armour reproductions and thus can make compelling estimations as to how pieces not yet found or not found intact might have been used or made based on practical knowledge of what is easy or difficult to make and thus why an infantry soldier of a low rank may have had different equipment from an officer (common practice). Also able to point out why, for example, things shown on Trajan's column may not portray things exactly as when completed. A good read.

Needs to be replaced

This is one of Osprey's oldest Men-at-Arms books, and is in dire need of replacement. The book never addresses its topic--the soldiers of the late imperial legions. The first half of the book covers Hadrian's Wall. The rest of the book discusses the archeological remains of armor, helmets, and swords. This book contains no discussion of the actual soldiers, battle formations, campaigns, tactics, historical antecdotes, or anything along the lines of what has become standard for the Men-at-Arms series. "The Rebuplican Roman Army, 200-104 BC" is hands down one of the best Men-at-Arms titles I've ever read, this book however is one of the worst, and I think a new one should be commissioned more along the lines of the former. For a better discussion of the soldiers of this period (and much better full-color plates), I recommend "Greece and Rome at War" by Peter Connonlly.

Margaret of Anjou was a vengeful and violent woman, or so we have been told, whose vindictive spirit fuelled the fifteenth-century dynastic conflict, the Wars of the Roses. In 1445, at the age of fifteen, she was married to the ineffectual Henry VI, a move expected to ensure peace with France and an heir to the throne. Eight years later, while she was in the later stages of her only pregnancy, Henry suffered a complete mental collapse that left him catatonic for roughly a year and a half: Margaret came to the political forefront. In the aftermath of the king's illness, she became an indefatigable leader of the Lancastrian loyalists in their struggle against their Yorkist opponents. Margaret's exercise of power was always fraught with difficulty: as a woman, her effective power was dependent upon her invocation of the authority of her husband or her son. Her enemies lost no opportunity to charge her with misconduct of all kinds. More than five hundred years after Margaret's death this examination of her life and career allows a more balanced and detached view.

Excellent analysis of an active queen, beyond the biographical details

Married off at fifteen to the weak-minded and ineffectual Henry VI, Margaret -- daughter of the glittering Duke René of Anjou -- was one of the most powerful (and complex) personalities of the period called the "Wars of the Roses." Shakespeare's depiction of her as the "she-wolf of France" probably was closer to the truth than many of his characterizations. But in addition to explaining the details of her life, Maurer is interested in exploring the motivations that drive a woman placed in power by circumstances -- and she's careful to distinguish "power" from "authority," for Margaret's world depended on hierarchy and rank; public power wielded by a woman required subtlety, even in a queen. A first-rate, thoughtful analysis of the circumstances under which "queenship" becomes "kingship."

Analysis, not biography

First off, let me say that this book is not a biography of Margaret of Anjou (1492-1549). What this book is is a look at what it meant to be Queen of England in the Middle Ages, and how Margaret worked within and around the roles of woman and queen. The book defines the queen’s prescribed roles as bringer of political advantages, impartial intercessor with the king, and bearer of an heir to the throne. The author shows that Margaret was careful to live up to these roles, to the best of her ability, and only found herself forced out of them by the power politics surrounding her husband’s incapacity and the subsequent War of the Roses.

Overall, I found this to be a good book, but not a great one. The author does not give any unnecessary background on any of the people she discusses, and indeed the academic analysis nature of the book gives it a choppy, uneven feel. The lack of background means that you *must* be familiar with the history of Margaret of Anjou, or you will quickly find yourself lost amid the analysis. Also, as this work is written as a scholarly analysis, it is very dry and makes poor bedtime reading.

So, if you are looking for a history of Margaret of Anjou, then I recommend that you look elsewhere. But, if you know about Margaret and want to understand her better as Queen of England, then you should read this book. Overall, I give this book a rather guarded recommendation.

This is the most Accurate of rising sign books I've ever read. I was so stunned at how insightful and accurate it was in reference to my own childhood and personality. He begins by analysing the sources for our knowledge of the military history of the period, assessing their reliability: some chroniclers exaggerate, others are careful observers or have access to official records. There follows an examination of the constituent parts of the medieval army, knights and footsoldiers, equipment and terms of service, behaviour on the field, and psychology, before the problematic question of medieval tactics is addressed through analysis of accounts of a series of major battles. Strategy is discussed in the context of these battles: whether to seek battle, fight a defensive war, or attempt a war of conquest. Originally published in Dutch in 1954, now translated and updated. J.F. VERBRUGGEN is a distinguished Belgian military historian of wide experience. Prisoner of war, student, and a member of the resistance movement during the second world war, he subsequently obtained his Ph.D., with greatest distinction, for research into warfare in the middle ages, and remained in the army as a lecturer at the Royal Military School in Brussels until in 1956 he went to the Belgian Congo. He spent twenty years teaching in Africa, retiring as Professor of History, University of Congo, and University of Bujumbura (Burundi) in 1976.

Old Guard Examination of an Important Topic

Published in 1954, J.F. Verbruggen's The Art of Warfare in Western Europe during the Middle Ages: From the Eighth Century to 1340 offers the modern historian a tantalizing view of how Western scholarship functioned before the social revolutions of the 1960s and 1970s. Rather than focus on social critiques or groundless commentary, Verbruggen offers an exciting, engaging, and sound view on nearly every aspect of martial Medieval Europe.
Overflowing with useful information, the piece is also deftly written and I attribute this both to Verbruggen's literary skill and the zeal of his translators of the English edition, Colonel Sumner Willard and Mrs. R.W. Southern. He opens with a useful examination of the historiographical problems associated with Medieval research, laying out a transparent key to all of his work. Whatever the difficulties with primary resources, whatever the scarcity of evidence, Verbruggen is careful to inform the reader, allowing him to form more meaningful opinions. After this helpful introduction to medieval studies, Verbruggen dive into his work. In a piece covering such a large period organization often vexes the author. Verbruggen has aptly decided to eschew pure chronology and instead works in themes.
In the first section of the book, Verbruggen deals purely with the armaments, tactics, and backgrounds of the bipartite Medieval army: the knights and the foot soldiers. He discusses the weapons and armor favored by these men, how they trained and battle, and, when available, the opinions and values of the men who fought for king and God. Naturally, the piece favors the knights in depth and the sections about foot soldiers deal more the wealthy communal armies or mercenary corps but this is to be expected - their power and prestige ensured that a much larger corpus of evidence exists for these warriors. Verbruggen is however still able to offer serf armies and armed peasants their due, commenting on how feudal vassals were employed in the field and also covering local militias created as village defenses. His writings on both unit types are colored not only by equipment catalogs and chivalric lore but also psychological examinations and moral examinations all firmly grounded in the evidence. Following his comments grounding knights and foot soldiers, Verbruggen then examines their historical value through battle and treatise accounts. In this way he comments on both the realities and ideals surrounding the medieval army.
The last two chapters of the work deal with general tactics and strategy. Building upon the foundations laid in the previous two chapters, Verbruggen offers a much wider view of medieval warfare, no longer constrained by the type of warrior he is dealing with. Herein Verbruggen deals with how medieval commanders employed terrain, unit cooperation and command structure. He does this both by commenting on martial manuals of the time and through the accounts of battles which actually occurred. Verbruggen provides insightful and meaningful looks at medieval strategy, comparing what was written about the topic by contemporaries and how this was realized on the actual battlefield. The two major sections of the work provide the reader with an in-depth view of the men who fought on the plains of war and the men who led them into battle.
As noted in Matthew Bennett's introduction, a very great deal of literature now exists about medieval warfare. This is in stark contrast to Verbruggen's time when the few existing texts all criticized the tactics of that era. Verbruggen's work is of course not without its fault. Recently discovered manuscripts and the advances in medieval history made through archaeology have opened many new avenues of inquiry and the concerned reader would thus do well to seek out more modern texts to fully understand this topic. Verbruggen remains, however, an indispensible resource for examining medieval warfare. This is due as much to his resource, which cleaves strongly to the ancient chronicles, histories, and legends as to Verbruggen's writing style. Engaging yet insightful, easily digested yet full of information, Verbruggen has wed the heights of scholarship with ease of use. The Art of Warfare in Western Europe remains a paramount resource for any medieval historian, military scholar, or combat aficionado.

Leaves no subject untouched !

This book covers such a wide period of time and stretches across a great area of land and battlefields, that I was doubtful that a complete understanding of the period could emerge from this single work. I was very wrong. Although a bit hard to read at some points the writing is relevant, conclusive and leaves no "open-ended" ideas.

One thing missing though is a map of Europe with the place names of that time. besides this, a great work on medieval warfare. If you only plan to read a single book on the subject, this is the one !

Lots of Information, Tough Read

This book is a thorough study of the warfare of this age. It includes good information on the psychological state of the combatants and the development of different tactics throughout the time period. Much effort is spent dissecting the different uses of knights and foot troops with descriptions of battles as support. I read a lot of military history, but this book is a tough read. It is more like a reference work than anything else and the organzition within the chapters could be better. I recommend this only to the most ardent history buffs.

This little book, with a forward by Alan Nolan, is essentially a synopsis of Nolan's work, with additional information on the later history of the Brigade (post-Gettysburg) that is not covered by Nolan. It is a useful and quick introduction to the history and look of the Brigade for those without time or inclination to devote to a full reading of Nolan's work. Selby's little book is complemented with general maps and color plates of the various uniforms and styles of dress found in the Iron Brigade.
