Incredible, realistic view of early Tampa Bay

I am a 30yr old Tampa Bay native of 5 generations. I read Tampa Boy at the age of 12. Out of sheer bordom I pulled it off of the shelf in my grandmother's library. Of all of the books I have read about the history of growing up in the Tampa Bay area, this is the one book that has stayed up front in my memories and captured my heart. I tell everyone I know about this book and I feel that in the Florida school system this book should be included. It is both realistic and extremely, enduringly entertaining. I am currently trying to find a copy of this book for my son and my daughter to have when they are old enough to enjoy it.

Tampa Boys Bring Back Memories

I began reading this book while watching a movie and didn't stop for a few days. I was hooked after the first chapter. I enjoyed Tampa Boy from cover to cover and found myself to be very amused with the teenage boys' adventures in Florida in the early 1900's. The author did a wonderful job of keeping the reader intrested while throwing all sorts of events at you to absorb and relate to. I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes adventures with a dose of reality.

Delightful, entertaining adventure story!!

It must have been wonderful growing up in the Tampa Bay area 80 years ago! (I've only been here since 1955, when I was 7, and we moved to Clearwater from Detroit.) This is GREAT book for all ages. The escapades of the author were so believable and so funny. I read it to my kids a few years ago, much of the time through tears of laughter! Too bad this isn't still in print so more folks could enjoy a good read.

About the Author
Hudson was born in 1910 at Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He was educated bilingually in Switzerland. After his war service principally in SOE Operating in France and the Far East, he returned to Europe to work in the Control Commission for Germany, specialising in trade union affairs. He is now retired and living with is wife in Scotland.

About the Author
Gordon L Rottman entered the US Army in 1967, volunteered for Special Forces and completed training as a weapons specialist. He was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group until reassigned to the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in 1969–70. He entered the Texas Army National Guard in 1974 and was the full-time Operations Sergeant of 2nd Bn., 143rd Inf., 36th Airborne Brigade until 1980, when he assumed a similar position with Co. G (Ranger), 143rd Inf. Reverting to part-time status in 1986, he is now the Opposing Forces Group Operations Sergeant in the Army Reserve's 75th Manoeuvre Area Command in Houston. He is a civilian contract Special Operations Forces Intelligence Specialist at the Army's Joint Readiness Centre, Ft Polk.

Very good introduction

While you won't be able to assemble a set of full gear using this as a reference, this is an unbelievably good primer on the basics of German field equipment. Covers all basic items of kit very well, and gives dates of introduction, common colour shades, and extent of issue (ie to whom the items were issued and for what purposes).

Illustrations and colour plates top notch - clear and well laid out, rich with detail. Photos very good also, many unpublished ones, and of a uniformly high quality. Equipment and artifact photos a little poorly done, obviously taken outside in bright sunlight, making for harsh shadows and poor detail.

Overall, possibly the best basic guide out there, certainly for the money. Next step up would be Lee's SOLDAT series, which is more of an investment and lacks the clarity of Volstad's colour plates, but goes into more detail from a collector's point of view regarding variants and how to tell fakes from real items.

The simple guide to WWII German belt gear

I'm impressed that Gordon Rottman managed to cram a comprehensive guide into 48 pages. Most of these pages are either illustrated by Ron Volstad or have photographs--many of the photos are from that period.

I learned a lot from this little book. I used to think that the three-cell Mauser rifle pouches held 45 rounds in 9 chargers--Rottman wrote that the M1909 cartridge pouch did, but had been replaced by the M1911. The latter held just 2 clips (Mauser magazine chargers) of 5 rounds each for a total of 30 rounds. A rifleman usually was issued a pair of pouches and carried 60 rounds. The G43-armed rifleman replaced one set of pouches with a two-pocket magazine carrier--with three 10-shot magazines and a M1911 cartridge pouch, the G43 rifleman had the same amount of ammunition as his Kar98k-armed brother. This makes a difference to war gamers, re-enactors, and museums.

What was carried in the bread bag? Was the mess kit/cook pot carried empty or full of food? When did the WWI spade get replaced by the folding entrenching tool? What equipment did a machine gunner carry? A platoon leader?

I have several 1:6th-scale German WWII squads that I'm outfitting for dioramas. "German Combat Equipments 1939-45" will help me get the little things correct without having to lug around a small library. Unfortunately, the people who make those 12-inch soldiers are a little skimpy on documentation packages. Rottman's book makes up for that lack.

Splendid Volume

This is an excellent beginner volume that covers all the basics, and in great detail. Perfect for modellers, re-enactors, or those weirdo adults who play with 12 inch dolls. Clear diagrams and pictures, and informed text captions. There is greater detail in the SOLDAT series by Cyrus Lee, and of course this doesn't compare to the now out of print work by Jack Angolia. But most people won't need all that. All the bases are covered with this one - very useful, and at a great price.

Bible for building ships in bottles

This was my second book of many books I own on building ships in bottles. I built my second ship in a bottle from this book (a clipper ship). This book and Don Hubbards book (my first book and first ship) are best for those starting out. What makes this book the best is that he also includes putting other things in bottles like a one legged pirate which I also built. This makes it a step above the rest. Once you learn from these two you can get others for more ideas and ship model plans. Even if your starting by building from a kit you need this book to learn the fundamentals.

The technique for getting a model ship into a bottle is pretty straightforward. Construct the ship outside the bottle with collapsible masts and sails, insert the rig, erect the masts, secure it, cork it, and you're done. I've been collecting various books on the subject recently and enjoy how each author puts their unique twist on the technique. Jack Needham has done an excellent job covering the topic.

a marvellous work on the Sword and it's impact

I think I have all of Ewart Oakeshott books, and find them an invaluable source of information on Knights, Weaponry, Armour and how the knight lived, girded himself for battle and their function in the Medieval feudal system. This book is no expect ion, but rather the rule to quality works.

It's full of just about everything you would want to know about the swords, their use, and construction. There are hundreds of sketches to help you understand his discussions, lots of black and white plate photos. The book is broken down to groups - Swords 1050-1350, Group 2 1350-1550, then breaks down into Pommel-Forms, Cross-Guards, Grips and Scabbards.

A wonderful references for the writer, sword collector and same the passing enthusiast.

The Standard Reference Work on Medieval Swords

R.E. Oakeshott is an internationally-known authority on medieval swords; this book is his masterwork. Conversational in tone, it is an easy read, yet still manages to convey an immense amount of information. Oakeshott's typology of medieval swords - which appears in this book - has gained international acceptance. After explaining his typology, the author proceeds to discuss each sword-type. The illustrations include depictions of each sword-type in contemporary art as well as plates of surviving museum pieces. Mr. Oakeshott's enthusiasm for his subject brims over each page, making his book a pleasure to read.

The authority on sword classification

This book is an incredibly detailed academic work on the classification of swords from the 10th century through to the 15th century.
The book is well written, and includes many clear photos (black and white) as well as dozens of sketchs to aid in the identification of these weapons.
The book is full of various historical bits pertaining to each class of sword.
However what makes this book so good, also makes it near useless to anyone but the die-hard sword collector. The book never strays from its details of sword classifications and thier dates of usage. I would not recommend reading this book "for the fun of it".
